Madagascar Lemur: The Indri

Indri is considered the largest day lemur. It is arboreal, and has a white and black coat. Its height is around 70 cm and its weight is 7 kilos; this will be your main attraction when visiting the Analamazotra Reserve. Its songs lasting up to 3 minutes will attract your attention each morning.

The Traveller’s Tree ( “Arbre du Voyageur” ), Symbol of the East

Endemic in Madagascar, it is a herbaceous plant resembling a palm tree and up to 10 meters in height. Its vast leaves evoke a fan. It is a veritable reservoir of water that once encouraged the traveller to cool off. Some parts are used by the locals for the construction of their vegetable huts. The “falafa” (split petioles) help to make the wall panels. The leaves of the tree are used to make blankets; The trunk is used to make the floor. The traveller’s tree is the emblem of the national airline Air Madagascar. It has been exported to botanical gardens in Mauritius, Congo, Hawxai and South China.

Sainte Marie, Pirate Island

The island was discovered in 1503 by Portuguese navigators who gave it the name Santa Maria. From 1685 to 1720, this was the time of piracy. Sainte-Marie became a popular base for pirates, an island devoid of any governmental authority.
The filibusters were on the lookout for any boat approaching the island; guns were their weapons of choice. If you visit the Pirate Cemetery, your guide will tell you the story of one of the most fascinating of them Olivier Levasseur, nicknamed “The Buse”. Diving enthusiasts can head north to Ambodifotatra (the island’s capital) where ships still lie there, including the Fiery Dragon, the richest pirate ship in history.
