Diego “Antsiranana” in Malagasy a French colony
The city was discovered in 1500 by the Portuguese. In 1884 the French fleet landed there and General Joffre developed an important strategic military base to control the southern Indian Ocean. Diego is considered one of the largest bays in the world with a body of water of 700 square km. It is the 4th port of the Big Island, with a cosmopolitan population. Walking through the main streets, you will see the colonial architecture.
Original: cocoa plantations in Ambanja
Cocoa farmers were introduced in 1900 on the Big Island. Plantations are concentrated in the Sambirano and Ambanja regions. The beans have an excellent reputation and harvests could reach 6,000 tonnes per year. Chocolate makers around the world are passionate about the organic quality of the production. The Millot Plantation near Ambanja is one of the best known; you can visit, taste, or even sleep in the guest rooms in the heart of the plantation.
New since 2024 : TERRAKOA The Land of chocolate in Ambanja
During Espace Mada’s last North reconnaissance in November 2023, Espace Mada met the team from TerraKoa, a very recent site in the South of Ambanja: Bel Ecolodge in the heart of a cocoa plantation. Numerous visits on the program: Their Plantation, Visit to the Sacred Mountain and Lemurs, Tour to the neighboring village, canoe ride and participate in the preparation of chocolate and of course its tasting! Period : Mainly other the year. From half january to start of March, it is unadvised. ( some parts of road could be inaccessibles )
Level : For all, walks in the reserves are adaptable in terms of difficulty and duration.

- Day 1Arrival Antananarivo
Meet at the airport and transfer to your hotel ( Comabva ) nearby the airport (Flight to Diego are generally early ). Overnight at the hotel.
- Day 2Antananarivo – Diego – Les 3 Baies
Pick up at your hotel and transfer airport. Flight to Diego. Assistance airport and departure for the 3 bays visit which are the sequence of the bay of Sakalava, the bay of the pigeons and the bay of the dunes. It is possible to walk along the bays for 3 hours to discover the fauna and flora. It is a quiet and uncrowded place where the fine white sand beach is of natural beauty. Then, discover the cape mine with its lighthouse and its canons inherited from the colonial area. You will enjoy a breathtaking view of the entrance to the Bay of Diégo-Suarez. And if the weather is clear, you might even see the clear waters of the Emerald Sea. You will end the walk in Ramena. Before dark, enjoy the beauty of the sunset. At the end of your visit, you will return to your hotel. Overnight at Lakana Ramena.
- Day 3Ramena : La Mer d’Emeraude
A vehicle will drop you off at Ramena pier; The crew of the boat will be waiting for you there. You will have an unforgettable day in the open sea. La Mer d’Emeraude ”The Emerald Sea” is an Emerald color Lagoon, located just after the little pass towards up the North. Shallow and transparent, it allows you to dive in a natural aquarium dream where fishes of all sizes, all shapes and colors seem it be given an appointment. Snorkeling Equipment is in our care (need to have your sizes). Picnic lunch prepared on the spot. Late in the afternoon, boat team bring you back to Ramena through the coral of a form of Tsingy to admire this beauty due to the battle of the Sea and limestone. Back to your hotel. Lakana Ramena.
- Day 4Amber Mountain
Transfer to Amber Mountain. Created in 1958, the Amber Mountain National Park is located at the heart of a volcanic region. Rightly regarded as a ”biological treasure”, it is home to a magnificent protected rainforest, protected from human impact, where a rich and complex nature thrives. Walk the botanical trail and enjoy various forms of vegetation (canarium, ficus, orchids… Meet different species of chameleons including the world’s smallest, the Brokesia Minima Tuberculata. Then also get to know the lemurs (crowned, fulvus …). A veritable water tower for the region, discover various waterfalls such as the Antomboka waterfall, the Sacred Waterfall, the Antakarana waterfall or Lake Mahasarika. At the end of your visit, our team will take you to the village to admire Joffreville before returning to your hotel in Diego. (50 kms stage – 1 hour – one way ). Overnight at Lakana Ramena.
- Day 5Tsingy of Ankarana
Departure for the Red Tsingy (located 50 km from Diego, 2 hours drive): Through the mountains, southeast of Diego, the Red Tsingy reserve other secrets of nature. Composed of sandstone, marl and limestone, just at the foot of the eroded canyons, in the only sedimentary basin of Madagascar and a heterogeneous vegetation, their balance is fragile. Then you will take the road to Anivorano. The driver will find a place for lunch en route. Continuation on Ambilobe. Installation at the hotel Relais de l’Ankarana. (100 kms stage – 3 hours to 3 hours 30, add one hour rountrip for the Red Tsingy from the bifurcation )
Day 6
AnkaranaTransfer for the Tsingy from Ankarana. The Ankarana National Park, composed of a Karsingy massif, stretches 35 km long (from east to west). Covered by numerous canyons covered with forests, caves, and underground rivers, it is home to endemic flora and fauna. Discover the Tsingy Rary, the turrets of the tsingy. Lunch recommended at Aurélien. In the afternoon you can visit the sacred cave of bats which is home to splendid stalactites and stalagmites (provide one flashlight per person).
- Day 7Ankarana – Ankify – Nosy BE
Departure very early in the morning to Ankify the starting point for the boat transfer to Nosy Be. Small stop about an hour for the tour ”Chez Cyrille” through cocoa plantations around Ambanja. After the visit continuation on Ankify then transfer by boat provided by the hotel of Nosy Be and installation in the hotel Nosy Lodge. (160 km stages – 3 hours 30 – boat crossing 1h)

Extension Ambanja after Ankarana : Road to reach Ambanja. Bifurcation by a beautiful trail until a lodge near the plantations. Installation at TerraKoa Ecolodge for 2 nights. (Step of 4 hours – 120 kms). Int he afternoon, Accompanied by a member of the team, you will go to the shade of the tall trees, discover the treasures of the plantation: cocoa trees, mango trees, banana trees, vanilla, pepper, guava trees, citrus fruits, rice, sugar cane… And we will explain the whole process of processing the cocoa bean. Accessible to all, 2 hours.
- Extension : Full day in Ambanja ( becomes Day 8 of the trip )Ambanja
In the morning, Hike in the sacred mountain of Ambohidravy to meet the lemurs (good physical condition necessary and allow 3 to 4 hours). Accompanied by a guide, you will visit the village next to the lodge, then cross the river in a dugout canoe, before hiking in the mountains on the lookout for lemurs, then return to the lodge by pirogue if the tide allows. Return to the Lodge. In the afternoon, You will participate in the preparation of an artisanal chocolate by following the different stages of processing: sorting of the beans, roasting, crushing, sifting, conching and molding, followed by the tasting of course !
